Normally I like albums, but today we are going to do the thing I don't like. We are going to talk about a greatest hits album. Today's album is one of those soundtracks of your life kind of albums. Good or bad times don't matter. When it's on, you turn up the volume so you don't miss a beat.

I own this band's entire catalog, but maybe it's laziness or that I just want to let it play all day, and this is a collection of songs that can't be separated. I am guessing you know the album from the big-ass title and cover at the top of the page, but I am going to type it out here:
Dire Straits: Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits

This album has some of the greatest guitar playing you will ever hear. It's not a hyper-speed run through every note on the fretboard; it's restrained and perfectly timed. Also, for an album from the '80s, there is no falsetto present, which is why this is timeless.

They sneak different genres into there without us rock fans realizing it. As the founder of the "I hate country music" crowd, I recognize there are country elements that make these songs iconic. There's a little bit of a lounge music vibe in there on "Calling Elvis."

One of my favorites is "Heavy Fuel," and I can't decide if it's spoken word or just a more progressive/jazz vibe. This is an example of the genre attacks they do, and I think this is what drove me to seek out other styles of music. I know as an angry teenager that I was a "metal or die" person, but secretly I listened to a lot of other music; I had to keep my metalhead disguise on in school.

Ok, now we are going to talk about one of the most iconic tracks that is Dire Straits. "Sultans of Swing." I am not even going to guess what genre this is. We need a new genre called Legendary. So that is the genre I am going to call this. This might be a perfect song, and if you don't agree, well, you are completely wrong.

Then they break into ballads that you can't skip if you try. When you reach for the skip button, your brain goes into revolt and your hand moves to that volume knob.

Ok, let's pretend that things still have knobs, not stupid buttons. They are like someone is telling you the most important story of their lives and you can't stop listening.

I saved "Money for Nothing" for last. This is the gateway drug to Dire Straits. That iconic riff that every guitar player wishes they created, and the lyrics are some of the most memorable. I know they call someone a word that we all hate, but he is telling a story from the perspective of other people, not from his personal beliefs. So I am choosing to believe he doesn't think this.

In closing, and in keeping with my writing reviews of albums I love and that no one will read since it's been out a really long-ass time, here is my take.

Of course this gets a 5 out of 5 antidepressants. This is an antidepressant on its own.
